Dr. John + Johnny Winter + Roy Buchanan

dr-john

¤  Mac Rebennack  a.k.a.  Dr John   [1941-2019]

Although he didn’t become widely known until the 1970s, Dr. John had been active in the music industry since the late ’50s, when the teenager was still known as Mac Rebennack. A formidable boogie and blues pianist with a lovable growl of a voice, his most enduring achievements have fused New Orleans R&B, rock, and Mardi Gras craziness to come up with his own brand of «voodoo» music.

He’s also quite accomplished and enjoyable when sticking to purely traditional forms of blues and R&B. On record, he veers between the two approaches, making for an inconsistent and frequently frustrating legacy that often makes the listener feel as if «the Night Tripper» (as he’s nicknamed himself) has been underachieving.

♦   ‘Goin’ Back To New Orleans’  ↓

Goin’ back home, fe nan e’
To the land of the beautiful queen

Goin back to home to my baby
Goin’ back to New Orleans
[Spoken:]
On the double, here comes the Neville Brothers!
Seeing na-na, my parin,
Couzine and my ma and pa

Want to plant my feet on Rampart Street
 – Be there for the Mardi Gras

Goin’ back home,  fe nan e’
And never more will I roam

Goin get me fill of that etoufee
Cus New Orleans is my home
Get some crawfish, jambalaya
 Red beans and fine pralines

Get some lovin’ that gonna satisfy
 Home in New Orleans

[Neville Brothers:]
Goin’ back home,  fe nan e’
 – In the land of the Carnival Queen

I’m goin’ back home to my baby
 – Goin’ back to New Orleans
I want go back home
 – Back where I’m little known

Yeah, home, boss
 – You’re home sweet home.
Goin’ back home,  fe nan e’
In the land of the Carnival Queen

I’m goin’ back home to my baby
 Goin’ back to New Orleans

san

Such a night, it’s such a night
Sweet confusion under the moonlight
Such a night, such a night
To steal away, the time is right
Your eyes caught mine, and at a glance
You let me know that this was my chance
But you came here with my best friend Jim
And here I am, just tryin’ to steal you away from him
Oh, but if I don’t do it, you know somebody else will
If I don’t do it, you know somebody else will …

And it’s such a night, it’s such a night
Sweet confusion the time seem right
It’s such a night, such a night
To steal away, the time is right
Yeah, I couldn’t believe my ear
And my heart just skipped a beat
When you told me to take you walkin’ down the street
Oh yeah, you came here with my best friend Jim
Here I am, just tryin’ to steal you away from him
Oh, but if I don’t do it, you know somebody else will
If I don’t do it, you know somebody else will . . .
 ‘Cause it’s such a night

♦  ◊  ‘I Know What I’ve Got’  ↓  [1996]

Sometimes you treat me fine
then you get way out of line
but still in all I’m sticking like glue
know what I’ve got but I don’t know what I’m getting
baby I’m with you.

I thought I’d try to switch and find me someone rich
told myself how big could I get
I know what I’ve got but I don’t know what I’m getting
so baby I’m all set.

My friends say I could do a lot better
if this keeps up I’ll soon need a nurse
I know that I can’t do any better
but believe me I could do a lot worse.

Let’s have it understood: baby it’s you and me for good
anyone who doubts it’s gotta go
I know what I’ve got but I don’t know what I’m getting

You know baby I love you so
Something I forgot to tell you baby: I love you so . . .

•  ‘Blue Skies’  ↑

Blue skies smilin’ at me – Ain’t nothin’ but blue skies do I see
Bluebirds singin’ a song – Ain’t nothin’ but bluebirds all day long

Never saw the sun shinin’ so bright
Never saw things goin’ so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you’re in love, oh my how they fly

Blue days, all of them gone – Ain’t nothin’ but blue skies from now on . . .

◊ → ‘Right Place, Wrong Time’  ↓   [Dr John & Eric Clapton]

You know, I been in the right place but it must have been the wrong time
I’d of said the right thing but I must have used the wrong line
I been in the right trip but I must have used the wrong car
My head was in a bad place and I’m wondering what it’s good for

I been the right place but it must have been the wrong time
My head was in a right place but it seems wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong

I been running trying to get hung up in my mind
Got to give myself a little talking to this time
Just need a little brain salad surgery – Got to cure my insecurity

I been in the right place but it must have been the wrong time
I been in the right place but it must have been the wrong song
I been in the right vein but it seems like the wrong arm
I been in the right world but it seems wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong

Slipping, dodging, sneaking – Creeping hiding out down the street
See me life shaking with every who I meet
Refried confusion is making itself clear
Wonder which way do I go to get on out of here

I been in the right place but it must have been the wrong time
I’d have said the right thing but I must have used the wrong line
I’d a took the right road but I must have took a wrong turn
Would have made the right move but I made it at the wrong time
I been on the right road but I must have used the wrong car

¤  Johnny Winter   [1944-2014]

Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, Johnny was one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd) Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

∇  ‘Be Careful With A Fool’  ⇓  [1970]

Man, be careful with a fool –  you know, someday he may get smart

He will treat you so cool and chilly, till he hurt you to your heart
Yeah, you know
Hate to remember, oh, what a fool I used to be, ha, ha!

The way I used to love you, woman, how bad it’s gonna be
¦
You know, I used to cry ‘bout you, woman!
I’d-a walk the streets a-late at night
If you love me just a little bit, woman, why in the world don’t you treat me right?
¦
Ah, yeah  –  Ah!   Yeah, baby!
Uh, finally over, baby, whoa, I believe this is the end …

I want to tell you my baby  to forgive me for my sin

♦ ‘Sound The Bell’ ⇓  [1987]

I went out and got married

Thought I’d live a happy life

But before I could settle down

Another man had stole my wife

Well, sound the bell, yes it feels so sad

Nobody knows, the troubles I had, no!

If you see my woman, won’t you tell her for me

That you left me crying, and my heart’s in misery

Well, sound the bell – well I feel so sad

Nobody knows the troubles I had

 Noooo!

[Instrumental]

You might think I’m crazy, but I’ll never love again

I’m going back home to my mama,
‘cause she’s my only friend

Sound the bell – Lord, I feel so sad

Nobody knows, the troubles I had-no

Nobody knows, the troubles I had, NO!

Nobody knows the troubles I had.
⇓  ‘No More doggin’

Honey, no more doggin’, foolin’ ‘round with you . . .
I’m gonna let’cha out baby, and that’s what I have to do

Well, told you all the straights and I made you fine
You spend my money on whiskey, beer and wine
No more doggin’, foolin’ ‘round with you,
I’m gonna let’cha out baby, and that’s what I have to do

Well, ya told me that’cha love me and you told me a lie
Yes, I’ll love you until the day I die
No more doggin’, foolin’ ‘round with you
I gotta let’cha out, baby, and that’s what I’ve got, oh yes

Well, ya know I love ya baby and I can’t help myself
Yes, I’ll love you until the day I die
No more doggin’, foolin’ ‘round with you
I gotta let’cha out, baby, and that’s what I’ve got to do . . .

♦  ‘Death Letter’ ⇓

I got a letter this mornin’, how do you reckon it read?
It said, «Hurry, hurry, the gal you love is dead»
I got a letter this mornin’, how do you reckon it read?
it said, «Hurry, hurry, the gal you love is dead»

I packed up my suitcase, and I took off down the road
When I got there she was layin’ on a coolin’ board
I grabbed up my suitcase, and I took off down the road
When I got there she was already layin’ on a coolin’ board

I walked up right close, looked down in her face
Said, the good ol’ gal got to lay here ‘til the Judgment Day
I walked up right close, and I looked down in her face
the good ol’ gal, she got to lay here ‘til the Judgment Day

Looked like there was 10,000 standin’ round the buryin’ ground
I didn’t know I loved her ‘til they laid her down
Looked like 10,000 standin’ round the buryin’ ground
I didn’t know I loved her ‘til they begin to lay her down

I folded up my arms and I walked away
I said, «Farewell honey, I’ll see you on Judgment Day»
Folded up my arms, oh, yeah, I walked away
«Farewell, girl, I’ll see you on the Judgment Day»

I didn’t feel so bad, ‘til the good ol’ sun went down
I didn’t have a soul to throw my arms around
I didn’t feel so bad, ‘til the good ol’ sun went down
I didn’t have a soul to throw my arms around

Hush, thought I heard her call my name
If she didn’t call so loud, it was so nice and plain
Ah, hush, I thought I heard her call my name …

03_ When a Guitar Plays the Blues

You know, you get the strangest feelin’ – Yeah, when a guitar plays the blues
You know, you get the strangest little feelin’ – Yeah, when a guitar plays the blues
You know, your body gets a message – Yeah, your soul has got to move

You know, you might even bat your eye – Yeah, you might even snatch or cry
Yeah, the feelin’ you’re feelin’ within you – Well, you know, you just can’t hide

You got to bend it like that – You kinda squeeze it like this
And it reaches down inside you – Yeah, your soul let just can’t resist

‘Cause you get the strangest kinda feelin’ – Yeah, when that guitar plays the blues
You know, your body gets a message
Yeah, your soul, your soul, your soul has got to move

And when the music’s over, It’s time to turn out the lights
You know the blues goes home with ya – Yeah, that soothes you through the night

You get the strange kinda feelin’ – Yeah, when that guitar plays the blues
You know, your body gets the message
And your soul, your soul, your soul, your soul has got to move

04_ with Albert Collins & Lonnie Mack: →’Further on down the road’⇐

Further on down the road, someone’s gonna hurt you like you hurt me . . .
Further on down the road, babe, baby you just wait and see
Got to reap just what you sow – that old sayin’ is true . . .
If you mistreat someone, pretty babe, someone’s gonna mistreat you
Yeah, you’re laughin’ pretty babe, some day you’re gonna be cryin’ . . .
Further on down the road, you’ll find out I wouldn’t lie
. . .
