When Howlin’ Wolf [1910-1976] made his trademark entrance the audience went wild. He took the stage crawling on all tours, a fierce Black animal, loosing the ferocious howl that gave him his name. The energy level was enormous, a combination of excitement, fear and fascination that thrilled deep.
Chester Arthur Burnett went on to make musical history in Chicago, where along with Muddy Waters he defined modern “Chicago Blues”, recording countless examples of raunchy, funky, powerhouse emotion.

When my baby walk, you know she’s fine and mellow . . .
Every time she stops, her flesh it shake like jello
Oh, shake it baby, shake it for me – Oh, shake lil’ baby, shake it for me
Oh, shake it little baby, shake like a willow tree

Wo, tell me darlin’ may I have a talk with you,

Come on home baby
Now now listen to me baby while I hold your hand,

Because it won’t be long before our true love will be through
I’d rather be dead ↑ Six feets in the ground Killed him for murder, in the first degree
Judge’s wife cried, ‘Let him go free’ I am a back door man … I am a back door man Cop’s wife cried, ‘Don’t take him down’
I’d rather be dead – Six feets in the ground Killed him for murder, in the first degree
Judge’s wife cried Let him go free I am a back door man – I am a back door man
Well the men don’t know, but little girls understand When you come home you can eat pork and beans
I eats mo’ chicken any man seen I am a back door man – I am a back door man
Well the men don’t know, but the little girls understand …

Φ The real story of the blues

¤ John Lee Hooker [1917-2001]
More than any other blues, Hooker’s early music has at its core a deep connection with African musical forms. The constrictions of 12-bar structure do not concern to him, and many of the chords he locates on his guitar are not found in any book. Frequently, with the help of loud amplification, these “bent”, undocumented chords become hypnotic, African-sounding drones.
¤ That’s My Story ← [trailer]
[A film by Jörg Bundschuh]
‘That’s My Story’ is also the title of a famous Hooker song with many autobiographic elements […] The film accompanies him musically through the last six decades by using material from the archives to the latest recordings.

♦ ‘Hobo Blues’ ⇓
When I first thought to hobo’in, hobo’in,
I took a freight train to be my friend, oh Lord
You know I hobo’d, hobo’d, hobo’d, hobo’d,
Hobo’d a long, long way from home, oh Lord
Yes, my mother followed me that mornin’, me that mornin’
She followed me down to the yard, oh yeah
She said my son he’d gone, he’d gone, he’d gone
Yes he’s gone in a, poorsome wear, oh yeah
Yes I left my dear old mother, dear old mother
I left my honor, need a crime, oh Lord
Take care of my child, Take care, take care of my child
◊ ‘Serves Me Right To Suffer’ ⇓
It serves me right to suffer – It serves me right to be alone . . .
You see I’m living in the memory of a day that has passed and gone
Everytime i see a woman – You know it makes me think about mine . . .
You see I’m living in the memory of a woman I’ve left behind
It serves me right to suffer – It serves me right to be alone . . .
Now I’m living in the memory of a woman that has passed and gone
∇ ‘Boogie Chillen’ ⇓
Well my mama she didn’t ‘low me just to stay out all night long
I didn’t care what she didn’t ‘low, I would boogie anyhow
I’m layin’ down one night when mama and papa told me
I heard papa tell mama, «let that boy boogie
it’s in him, and it got to come out»
I felt so good . . . I felt good
went on boogie’n just the same – yeah
When I first came to town people, everybody was talkin’ about the Henry Swing Club
I dropped in there that night
I got there, I say, «Hey – hey – hey!»
They’re havin’ a ball!
Thank you
