Tea for Two

A song from the 1924 musical No, No, Nanette with music by Vincent Youmans and lyrics by Irving Caesar. It is a duet sung by Nanette and Tom (Louise Groody and Jack Barker) in Act II as they imagine their future.

The stage musical inspired David Butler‘s musical film in 1950, starring Doris Day as Nanette Carter and Gordon MacRae as Jimmy Smith.

«Tea for Two» soon became a jazz standard and was recorded by numerous bands and instrumentalists. Even Dimitri Shostakovich orchestrated the piece in 1927, which he named  ‘Tahiti Trot Op. 16′

Picture me upon your knee, with tea for two and two for tea
Just me for you and you for me alone
Nobody near us to see us or hear us
No friends or relations on weekend vacations
We won’t have it known, dear, that we own a telephone, dear

Day will break and I’ll awake and start to bake a sugar cake
For you to take for all the boys to see
We will raise a family, a boy for you and a girl for me
Can’t you see how happy we would be
