Well this gigolo’s jumping salty, ain’t no trade out on the streets,
Half past the unlucky, and the hawk’s a front-row seat
Dressed in full orchestration, stage-door Johnny’s got to pay,
And they sent him home talking ‘bout the one that got away
Well, believe it or not I used to be on Easy Street, I used to be a wheel,
With irons in the fire and all them business deals
But the last of the big-time losers shouted just before he drove away,
«I’ll be right back, as soon as I crack the one that got away»
Well, Andre’s at the piano behind the Ivar in the sewers,
With a buck a shot for pop tunes, and a fin for guided tours
He could-a been in «Casa Blanca», he stood in line out there all day
Now he’s spilling whiskey and learning songs about a one that got away
Well I’ve lost my equilibrium and my car keys and my pride,
The tattoo parlor’s warm, and so I hustle there inside
And the grinding off the buzz-saw, «What you want that thing to say?»
«Just don’t misspell her name, buddy, she’s the one that got away»
And Costello was the champion at the St. Moritz Hotel,
And the best this side of Fairfax, reliable sources tell
But his reputation is at large, and he’s at Ben Frank’s every day,
Drinking coffees, waiting for the one that got away
I’ve seen him with a snakeskin sportshirt, he looks like Vincent Price,
With a little piece of chicken … (it goes like that…)
♦ ‘Way Down In The Hole’ ↓
When you walk through the garden, you gotta watch your back
well, I beg your pardon, walk the straight and narrow track
if you walk with Jesus, he’s gonna save your soul
you gotta keep the devil way down in the hole
he’s got the fire … he’s got the fury at his command
oh you don’t have to worry if you hold on to Jesus hand
we’ll all be safe from Satan when the thunders start to roll
we gotta keep the devil, keep him on down in the hole
That red horned lousy low life, underneath our boots – Praise the Lord
I don’t know what it is – Two dollar – That demon meister
Three dollar – That prince devil
Just see if you can come up with a figure that matches your faith
You say how much has Jesus done for you and we got to go in with our
Hydraulic system and blast him out – People can I get an amen
All the angels sing all about Jesus’ mighty sword
and they’ll shield you with their wings and keep you close to the lord
don’t pay heed to temptation, for his hands are so cold
you gotta keep the devil, keep him on down in the hole [ . . . ]
Well people, I got to speak about something
Can I get an amen – Can I get a hallelujah
Praise the lord – Have mercy
The lord is a very very busy man – I do what I can
But Jesus is always going for the big picture
But he’s always there to help us out of the little jams too
Down in the hole… Down in the hole … Keep him down in the hole
We got to keep the Devil down in the hole
We got to keep the Devil, Keep him on down in the hole
Down… Down down down – Mighty devil
I send you down below my boots – Down down
Filling my life with anger and strife
Go down mighty Devil
Find a place to live down down down
♠ ‘I’ll Be Gone’ ↓
Tonight I’ll shave the mountain
I’ll cut the hearts from pharoahs
I pull the road off of the rise
tear the memories from my eyes
and in the morning I’ll be gone
I drink 1000 shipwrecks
tonight I’ll steal your paychecks
I paint the sheets across my bed
the birds will all fly from my head
and in the morning I’ll be gone
take every dream that’s breathing
find every boot that’s leaving
shoot all the lights in the cafe
and in the morning I’ll be gone
I bet 1000 dollars
I have a French companion
I tie myself below the deck
I pull the rope around my neck
and in the morning I’ll be gone
it takes a life to win her
there is a drum of bourbon
800 pounds of nitro
his boots are thunder as he plays
there is a stone inside it
tonight his bones will ride it
I’ll need a tent to hide it
and in the morning I’ll be gone . . .

There is a light in the forest
There is a face in the tree
I’ll pull you out of the chorus
And the first one’s always free
You can never go hunting
With just a flintlock and a hound
You won’t go home with a bunting
If you blow a hundred rounds
It takes much more than wild courage
Or you’ll hit just the tattered clouds
You must have just the right bullets
And the first one’s always free
You must be careful in the forest
Broken glass and rusty nails
If you’re to bring back something for us
I have bullets for sale
Why be a fool when you can chase away
Your blind and your gloom
I have blessed each one of these bullets
And they shine just like a spoon
To have sixty silver wishes
Is a small price to pay
They’ll be your private little fishes
And they’ll never swim away
I just want you to be happy
That’s my only wish
I’ll fix your wagon and your musket
And the spoon will have his dish
And I shudder at the thought of your
Poor empty hunter’s pouch
So I’ll keep the wind from your barrel
And bless the roof of your house

I wonder what is he building in there? What the hell is he building in there?
He has subscriptions to those magazines… He never waves when he goes by
He’s hiding something from the rest of us… He’s all to himself… I think I know why… He took down the tire swing from the Peppertree
He has no children of his own – you see… He has no dog And he has no friends and
His lawn is dying… and
What about all those packages he sends. What’s he building in there?
With that hook light on the stairs. What’s he building in there… I’ll tell you one thing: he’s not building a playhouse for the children what’s he building in there? Now what’s that sound from under the door?
He’s pounding nails into a hardwood floor… and I swear to god I heard someone moaning low… and I keep seeing the blue light of a T.V. show…
He has a router and a table saw… and you won’t believe what Mr. Sticha saw
There’s poison underneath the sink of course… But there’s also enough formaldehyde to choke a horse… What’s he building in there? What the hell is he building in there? I heard he has an ex-wife in some place called Mayors Income, Tennessee And he used to have a consulting business in Indonesia…
but what is he building in there? What the hell is he building in there?
He has no friends – But he gets a lot of mail
I’ll bet he spent a little time in jail…
I heard he was up on the roof last night signaling with a flashlight
And what’s that tune he’s always whistling…
What’s he building in there? What’s he building in there? We have a right to know…

I was in a line at the supermarket the other day, and uhm… y’know, I had all my things on the conveyor belt there… There’s a gal in front of me that is uh.. well, she’s staring at me and I’m getting a little nervous and uh, she continues to stare at me. And I uh, I keep looking the other way. And then, finally she comes over closer to me and she says:
«I apologize for staring, that must have been annoying. I, I… You look so much like my son, who died. I just can’t take my eyes off you.» And she precedes to go into her purse and she pulls out a photograph of her son who’d died. And uh, he looks absolutely nothing like me. In fact he’s… Chinese. Uh… anyway, we chatted a little bit. And uh, she says: «I’m sorry, I have to ask you. Would you mind, as I leave the supermarket here, would you mind saying «Goodbye mom» to me? I, I know it’s a strange request but I haven’t heard my son saying «Goodbye mom» to me, and «So long» and it would mean so much to me to hear it. If you don’t mind I… «
And I said: «Well, you know, okay, yeah, sure. Eh.. uh… I can say that.» And, and so, she uh gets her groceries all checked out. And uh, as she’s going out the door, she waves at me and she hollers across the store: «Goodbye son!» And I look up and I wave and I say: «Goodbye mom!» And then she goes, and uh…
So I get my few things there, on the conveyor belt and the checker checks out my things. And uh, and he gives me the total and he says: «That’ll be four hundred and seventy nine dollars.» Uh… and I said: «Well, how is that possible! I’ve only got a little tuna fish, and uh some skimmed milk, and uh mustard and a loaf of bread…» He goes: «Well, well you’re also paying for the groceries for your mother. She uh, told me you’d take care of the bill for her.» And I said: «Well, wait a minute! That’s not my mother!» And he says: «Well I distinctly heard her say as she left the store «Bye son!» and you said «Bye mom!» So what are you trying to say here, uh…»
I said: «Well, JESUS!» And I looked out into the parking lot and she was just getting into her car. And I ran out there. And she was just closing the door, and she had a little bit of her leg sticking out of the door and she was pulling away and I grabbed her leg and I started PULLING it! Just the way… I’m pulling yours…

I wanna read your mind to know just what I’ve got in this new thing I’ve found
So tell me what I see when I look in your eyes
Is that you baby or just a brilliant disguise
I heard somebody call your name from underneath our willow
I saw something tucked in shame underneath your pillow
Well I’ve tried so hard baby but I just can’t see
What a woman like you is doing with me
So tell me who I see when I look in your eyes
Is that you baby or just a brilliant disguise
Now look at me baby, struggling to do everything right
And then it all falls apart when out go the lights
I’m just a lonely pilgrim – I walk this world in wealth
I want to know if it’s you I don’t trust
‘Cause I damn sure don’t trust myself
Now you play the loving woman – I’ll play the faithful man
But just don’t look too close into the palm of my hand
We stood at the alter – The gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours – Well maybe baby the gypsy lied
So when you look at me, you better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby or just a brilliant disguise

I see me standing in the acid rain, full of existential pain
You can look for love so long until you’re sure you’ll never feel so good again
Then you came along like a angel, like a lover, like a friend
Yeah, everything I do leads me back to you Well, I’m a man without a place, sometimes afraid to show my face
Hear me humming in the night when you turn out the light
They can blow my tires out till I’m filled up with nothing else but doubt
Still I’m rolling on my rims – Oh, baby coming back to you again
Yeah, everything I do leads me back to you When I’m on the rise – When it’s do or die – Oh, Lullaby
Would you take an alibi if I said it was you and I further on …
Cause it’s everything I do
Everything I do…
You know it’s hard for a man to sing when his pride blocks everything
You can have a way with words when your thoughts they can’t be heard
But don’t take it the wrong way, like half the things I ever tried to say
Well, I got my demons too, but my angels they’re all cheering for you
Cause everything I do, it leads me back to you
Yeah everything I do, it leads me back to you …
¤ The Life and Career of Bruce Springsteen ⇐
Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re taking a look at the life and career of singer-songwriter, Bruce Springsteen.
• Early Bands
Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen was born on September 23rd, 1949 in Long Branch, New Jersey. It was at the age of seven that Springsteen saw Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan Show, and this prompted his interest in music. Buying his first guitar at 13, it wasn’t long before he started playing in bands. These included the trio Earth, with whom he acquired his nickname, “The Boss,” and Steel Mill, a band that featured the core members of what would later become the E Street Band.
• Columbia Records Debut
Aside from his band experience, Springsteen was also playing solo shows at various nightclubs. In 1972, he signed a deal with Columbia Records. His debut, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., was recorded with the E Street Band and released in January 1973.
• Breakthrough with «Born to Run»
Springsteen’s sophomore record, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, was released in September of that same year. Though it was widely accepted by critics, the album sold poorly, much like his first record. The next year, music critic John Landau became Springsteen’s manager, and co-produced what would become the singer’s breakthrough record, 1975’s Born to Run. The album was a critical and commercial success, and both its title track and the song “Thunder Road” became rock radio staples.
• «Darkness on the Edge of Town» and «The River»
The E Street Band stayed on tour for much of the next year while a lawsuit between Springsteen and his former manager was settled. He returned to the studio in 1977 to record Darkness on the Edge of Town, an album that showcased his political awareness more than previous efforts. He continued with the theme of working-class life on his 1980 album The River, and the record produced The Boss’ first top ten hit, “Hungry Heart.”
• «Born in the USA» and Live Performances
1982 saw Springsteen release the solo acoustic record, Nebraska. This was followed up with what is his biggest album to date, 1984’s Born in the U.S.A. This record spawned seven Top Ten singles, including the popular “Dancing in the Dark.” Two years later, a box set entitled Live/1975-85 further cemented his reputation as a solid performer and became one of the most commercially successful live albums of all time.
• Love and Relationships
In 1987, Springsteen came out with Tunnel of Love, an album that focused on love’s ups and downs. During the subsequent tour, news of an affair between Springsteen and backup singer Patti Scialfa (SKAL-fah) led to his divorce from his first wife, Julianne Phillips, in 1988. Soon after, Springsteen dissolved the E Street Band, moved to California and married Scialfa in 1991.
• More Albums, Including His «Greatest Hits»
In March 1992, Springsteen released two albums, Lucky Town and Human Touch. The next year, he wrote “Streets of Philadelphia” for the movie, “Philadelphia.” This song won him a Golden Globe, an Oscar and several Grammy awards. His first Greatest Hits album came out in 1995 and was followed by his eleventh studio album, The Ghost of Tom Joad, later that year.
• The E Street Band and Other Projects
By 1999, Springsteen had reformed the E Street Band to the delight of fans. Together, they went on a massive reunion tour. Springsteen’s first album with the full band in almost two decades was released shortly after. 2002’s The Rising was released in the wake of the September 11th attacks. Proving his status as a hard-working music man, a solo record called Devils & Dust was released in 2005, and a Pete Seeger cover album entitled We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions followed a year later.
• «Magic» and «Working on a Dream»
In 2007, he went back into the studio with the E Street Band and recorded his fifteenth album, Magic. The next year, Springsteen showed his support for President Barack Obama during his campaign by playing material that would soon be released on his 2009 album, Working on a Dream, at rallies. 2010 saw the re-release of his 1978 album, Darkness on the Edge of Town. Released as a box set, the album was accompanied by a documentary called, “The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.”
• Springsteen’s Enduring Heartland Rock
This singer-songwriter, guitarist, social activist and family man has been one of rock’s top acts since the 1970s. With his own version of Heartland rock, featuring poetic yet accessible lyrics and lengthy live shows, Bruce Springsteen’s music has influenced many and is likely to continue doing so for generations to come.
