Jan Garbarek‘s sound is one of the hallmarks of the ECM Records label (Edition of Contemporary Music), founded in Munich, Germany, in 1969 by Manfred Eicher, who has always granted musicians total freedom to release as many records as they like. ECM’s motto is
‘the Most Beautiful Sound Next to Silence’
Garbarek’s style incorporates a sharp-edged tone, long, keening, sustained notes, and generous use of silence. As a composer, Garbarek tends to draw heavily from Scandinavian folk melodies, a legacy of his Ayler influence. He plays tenor & soprano saxophones, and he’s a pioneer of ambient jazz composition.

John Douglas Surman (born 30 August 1944) is a Cornish jazz saxophone, bass clarinet and synthesizer player, and composer of free jazz and modal jazz, often using themes from folk music as a basis. Surman has made many recordings for ECM, spanning from free form to mood music, and he remains one of the label’s most consistently stimulating artists. He has also composed and performed much music for dance performances and film soundtracks.
