Θ       «One for my Baby (and one more for the road)»  ↓

It’s quarter to three, there’s no one in the place except you and me
So, set ‘em up, Joe, I got a little story you oughta know
We’re drinkin’, my friend, to the end of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby and one more for the road

I got the routine, so drop another nickel in the machine
I’m feelin’ so bad, wish you’d make the music pretty and sad
Could tell you a lot, but you’ve got to be true to your code
So, make it one for my baby and one more for the road

You’d never know it but buddy, I’m a kind of poet
And I got a lot of things to say
And when I’m gloomy, you simply gotta listen to me
Till it’s all talked away

Well that’s how it goes and Joe, I know your gettin’ pretty anxious to close
So, thanks for the cheer, I hope you didn’t mind my bendin’ your ear
This torch that I found must be drowned or it soon might explode
So, make it one for my baby and one more for the road
That long, long road

∞   The Blues Are Brewin’ ↑

When the moon’s kinda dreamy, starry eyed and dreamy
And nights are luscious and long
If you’re kinda lonely, then nothin’ but the blues are brewin’
The blues are brewin’

When the wind through the window blows across your pillow
And tells you sleepin’ is wrong
If love goes a thirsting till you feel like bursting
Then nothing but the blues are brewin’
The blues are brewin’

Suppose you want somebody but you ain’t got nobody
You only got a gleam in your eyes
Till somebody’s found you and put their lovin’ arms around you
You got the feelin’ you want to die

But when the Lord up above you sends someone to love you
The blues are something you lose
You’re so busy doing the things that you’re doing
That love ain’t got no time
For brewin’ the blues

•  ‘Misty’  ↑

Look at me, I’m as helpless as a kitten up a tree;
And I feel like I’m clingin’ to a cloud,
I can’ t understand, I get misty, just holding your hand.
Walk my way  and a thousand violins begin to play,
Or it might be the sound of your hello that music I hear,
I get misty, the moment you’re near.

Can’t you see that you’re leading me on?  And it’s just what I want you to do,
Don’t you notice how hopelessly I’m lost – That’s why I’m following you.
On my own, when I wander through this wonderland alone,
Never knowing my right foot from my left,  my hat from my glove
I’m too misty,  and  too much in love … Too misty, and too much in love

•  ‘Every time we say goodbye’  ↑

Everytime we say goodbye, I die a little,
Everytime we say goodbye, I wonder why a little,
Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know.
Think so little of me, they allow you to go.

When you’re near, there’s such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There’s no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor,
Everytime we say goodbye . . .

Now you say you’re lonely – You cry the whole night through
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
And now you say you’re sorry for being so untrue
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
‘Cause I cried a river over you
You drove me nearly out of my head
While you never shed a tear, babe
Remember, I remember all that you said
You told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me
And now you say you love me
Well, just to prove that you do
Why don’t you cry me a river, cry me a river?
‘Cause I cried a river over you, over you
You say you love me, but you lie
Now you say you love me
Well, just to prove that you do
Come on and cry me a river, oh, cry me a river
I cried a river over you, I cried a river over you
I cried a river, now you can too
Cry me a river, cry me a river

•  ‘Desafinado’  ↑  [Stockholm _ 1963]

Love is like a never-ending melody – Always have compared it to a symphony
A symphony conducted by the lighting of the moon – But our song of love is slightly out of tune

Once your kisses raised me to a fever pitch – Now the orchestration doesn’t seem so rich
Seems to me you’ve changed the tune we used to sing – Like the bossa nova, love should swing

We used to harmonize, two souls in perfect time – Now the lyrics and the melody don’t even rhyme
For you forgot the melody our hearts would always croon – So what’s good’s a heart that’s slightly out of tune

Tune your heart to mine the way it used to be – Join our heart in harmony and sing a song of loving
We’re bound to get in tune again before too long

There’ll be no desafinado when you give your heart to me completely
Then you won’t be slightly out of tune – You’ll sing along with me.

Lullaby of Birdland, that’s what I always hear when you sigh.
Never in my wordland  could there be ways to reveal in a phrase how I feel.
Have you ever heard two turtle doves bill and coo when they love?
That’s the kind of magic  music we make with our lips when we kiss.

And there’s a weepy old willow, he really knows how to cry.
That’s how I’d cry on my pillow if you should tell me farewell and goodbye.
Lullaby of Birdland whisper low, kiss me sweet and we’ll go
flyin’ high in Birdland, high in the sky up above
all because we’re in love.
♥  ‘Lover Man‘ ↓  [1958]

I don’t know why but I’m feeling so sad
I long to try something I’ve never had
Never had no kissing – Oh what I’ve been missingS_vaughan
Lover man oh where can you be
The night is cold and I’m so all alone
I’d give my soul just to call you my own
Got the moon above me but no one to love me
Lover man oh where can you be

I’ve heard it said that the thrill of romance can be like a heavenly dream.
I go to bed with the prayer that you’ll make love to me
Strange as it seems, some day we’ll meet and you’ll dry all my tears
And whisper sweeet little things in my ears.
A huggin’ and a kissin’ – ooh what I’ve been missin’
Lover man oh where can you be . . .

∞  Sarah Vaughan & Dizzy Gillespie  ⇓ ‘Round Midnight’  [1987]

⇓  ‘Autumn Leaves’

Somewhere over the rainbow – Way up high
There’s a land that I heard of  once in a lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow  –  Skies are blue
And the dreams that I dare to dream  really do come true

Someday I wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops – that’s where you’ll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow  –  Blue birds fly
They fly over the rainbow –  oh why, oh why can’t I?

◊  Johnny Hartman ↓ ‘It Never Entered My Mind’ [Rodgers & Hart]

Introduced by Sammy Davis as one of the best ballad players he knows, and one of his closest buddies, from the Dizzy Gillespie days . . .

I don’t care if there’s powder on my nose.
I don’t care if my hairdo is in place.
I’ve lost the very meaning of repose.
I never put a mudpack on my face.
Oh, who’d have thought that I’d walk in the daze
now, I never go to shows at night, but just to matinees now.
I see the show and home I go.
Once I laughed when I heard you saying
that I’d be playing solitaire, uneasy in my easy chair.
It never entered my mind.
Once you told me I was mistaken,
that I’d awaken with the sun and order orange juice for one.
It never entered my mind.
You have what I lack myself
and now I even have to scratch my back myself.
Once you warned me that if you scorned me
I’d sing the maiden’s prayer again
and wish that you were there again to get into my hair again.
It never entered my mind.

NKC

A much-recorded popular song. Originally a 1945 French song «Les feuilles mortes» (literally «Dead Leaves») with music by Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert, English lyrics were written in 1947 by the American songwriter Johnny Mercer.

•  ‘Autumn leaves’  ↑

The falling leaves drift by the window  –  The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses  –  The sun-burned hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long and soon I’ll here old winner’s song
But I miss you most of all my darling when autumn leaves start to fall
⇓  ‘But Not For Me’

Old man sunshine, listen, you  never tell me dreams come true
Just try it, and I’ll start a riot
Oprah Winfrey don’t you dare  ever tell me she will care
I’m certain, it’s the final curtain
I never want to hear from any cheerful Polly-annas
Who tell you fate supplies a mate, it’s all bananas

They’re writing songs of love,  But not for me
A lucky star’s above,  But not for me
With love to lead the way
I’ve found more skies of gray
Than any Russian play could guarantee
I was a fool to fall  and get that way
Heigh-ho!  alas,   and also, lack-a-day
Although I can’t dismiss the memory of her kiss
I guess  she’s not for me

It all began so well  but what an end
This is the time a fella needs a friend
The climax of the plot should be a marriage knot
But there’s  no knot for me
Although I can’t dismiss the memory of her kiss
I guess  she’s not for me

◊  ‘FLY ME TO THE MOON’ – a popular standard song written by Bart Howard in 1954, originally titled «In Other Words«, by Nat King Cole

Poets often use many words to say a simple thing.
It takes thought and time and rhyme to make a poem sing.

With music and words I’ve been playing – For you I have written a song.
To be sure that you’ll know what I’m saying, I’ll translate as I go along…

Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, darling, kiss me

Fill my heart with song  and let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for  –  All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you . . .

♦  Freddy Cole  ↓  ‘Gentle Rain’

Weep over lost and alone in the world,
Walk with me in the gentle rain.
Don’t be afraid, I’ve a hand for your hand,
And I will be your love for a while.

I feel your tears as they fall on my cheek;
They are warm, like the gentle rain.
Come little one, you have me in the world
And our love will be sweet, will be sad
Like the gentle rain . . .

All of me – Why not take all of me
Can’t you see – I’m no good without you
Take my lips – I want to lose them
Take my arms – I’ll never use them
Your goodbye left me with eyes that cry
How can I go on dear without you

You took the part that once was my heart
So I suggest maybe that you could come and have the rest
Well goodbye […?]  how do you expect me to go on without you
You took the best – I know you got to come back and take the rest
Come on baby, come on daddy and get all of me  . . .

◊  ‘I’m Mad About the Boy’ [DW_1952] ↓ (Noël Coward _1932)

Mad about the boy – I know it’s stupid to be mad about the boy
I’m so ashamed of it but must admit the sleepless nights I’ve had about the boy
On the silverscreen he melts my foolish heart in every single scene
Although I’m quite aware that here and there are traces of the cad about the boy

Lord knows I’m not a fool girl  –  I really shouldn’t care
Lord knows I’m not a school girl  –  In the fury of her first affair
Will it ever cloy  this odd diversity of misery and joy
I’m feeling quite insane and young again
And all because I’m mad about the boy

So if I could employ  a little magic that will finally destroy
This dream that pains me and enchains me
But I can’t because I’m mad…  I’m mad about the boy

♦  ‘Send Me To The ‘lectric Chair’  ↓  (G. Brooks)

Judge, your Honor, you wanna hear my plea
Before you open up your court
I don’t want no sympathy ‘cause I just cut my good man’s throat
I caught him with a one of them trifling Jane
I warned him ‘bout a lot of times before
This time I pulled my knife and I went insane
Now the rest you already know
So Judge, please mister judge, send me to the ‘lectric chair

Judge, please mister judge, I just wanna go away from here
I wanna take a journey to the devil down below
I killed my man – I wanna reap for what I sow
So judge, please Mr judge,  send me to the ‘lectric chair

Lordy lordy judge, end me to the ‘lectric chair
Please Judge and Jury
You know I love him so dear but I cut him with my barlow
I kicked him in the side while he wallowed around and died
Oh judge, lordy lordy judge,  send me to the ‘lectric chair . . .
Judge, judge, go ahead and burn me ‘cause I don’t care
I don’t want no one good mayor to go my bail
don’t want to spend no ninety-nine years in jail
So judge, judge, please Mr judge, just send me to the ‘lectric chair

♦  ‘All or Nothing at All’ ↓ (A. Altman & J. Lawrence) – [Hambourg _1993]

All or nothing at all
Half a love, never appealed to me
If your heart, never could yield to me
Then I’d rather (rather) have nothing at all

All or nothing at all
If it’s love, there is no in between
Why begin then cry, for something that might have been
No I’d rather (rather) have nothing at all

But please don’t bring your lips so close to my cheek
Don’t smile or I’ll be lost beyond recall
The kiss in your eyes, the touch of your hand makes me weak
And my heart may go dizzy and fall

And if I fell (I fell) under the spell of your call
I would be, caught in the undertow
So you see, I’ve got to say no, no
All or nothing at all

moonlight-in-vermont

Pennies in a stream – Falling leaves, a sycamore – Moonlight in Vermont
Icy finger-waves – Ski trails on a mountainside – Snowlight in Vermont
Telegraph cables, they sing down the highway
and travel each bend in the road
People who meet in this romantic setting
are so hypnotized by the lovely  ev’ning summer breeze
Warbling of a meadowlark – Moonlight in Vermont
You and I are Moonlight in Vermont . . .

♦  ‘Lonely House’  ↓  [Langston Hughes, Kurt Weill]

At night when everything is quiet this old house seems to breathe a sigh
Sometimes I hear a neighbor snoring – Sometimes I hear a baby cry
Sometimes I hear a staircase creaking – Sometimes a distant telephone
Oh, and when the night settles down again the house and I are all alone

Lonely house, lonely me – Funny with so many neighbors – How lonely you can be
Lonely street, lonely town – Funny, you can feel so lonely with all these folks around
I guess there must be something that I don’t comprehend
Sparrows have companions; even stray dogs have a friend

The night for me is not romantic – Unhook the stars and take them down
I’m lonely in this lonely house,  in this  lonely town . . .

•  ‘All The Things You Are’  ↑

You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song

You are the angel glow that lights the star
The dearest things I know are what you are
Someday my happy arms will hold you
And someday I’ll know that moment divine
When all the things you are, are mine . . .

You are the promised kiss of springtime

    I’m blue every Monday

 Thinkin’ ‘bout Sunday

That one day when I’m with you.

I sigh all day Tuesday – I cry all day Wednesday

Oh my, how I long for you!

There comes Thursday

Gee, it’s long!  It never goes by!

Friday makes me feel like I’m gonna die.

But after payday – That’s my fun day

‘cause I ball all day Sunday

That’s the day

That’s the day when I’m with you…

.          .          .

But there comes Wednesday

Gee, it’s long!  It never goes by

Friday, it makes me feel like I’m gonna die

But then comes payday – That’s my fun day

I sang all day Sunday

That’s the day
I say, that’s  THE  day

I talk about Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

But Sunday

That’s   the   day   when    I’m  with  you !

•→ Song for my Father ⇐ [live]

This little song for my father does things that no other can do
As I sing it to you it has a rhythm and rhyme that will fasten his memory in time
As his beauty shines through

For through my mind and soul my heart will always hold a special place for him
It’s true

We bow our heads as we pray
Every day’s father day let’s review all that he mean to you
Our mother’s love is real nice but our dad sacrificed for us too
Let us give him his due

We’re very proud to be in his biography
We sing this song for him
And you

I took a trip to the mountains – I saw you trapped up in the cable way
I Prayed that you would fall and come floating down to me, oh yeah

You fall free style – You down from the sky
Oh I’ve been waiting – I’ve been waiting

I say leap into my arms, babe – C’mon dive into my soul
C’mon jump into my heart, babe – C’mon dive into my soul

I say leap into my arms, babe – C’mon dive into my soul
C’mon jump into my bob-sled – C’mon dive into my soul

Does it have to start right now when you where almost ready
When you where almost ready to leap from the sky down to me
Throwing your future to the wind, fearless

C’mon leap down from the sky – Down here by my side
Oh I’ve been waiting – You know I’ve been waiting

I say leap into my arms, babe – C’mon dive into my soul
C’mon jump into my heart, babe – C’mon dive into my soul . . .

I say Don’t look back, lock back…

Stitch me up  –  Pull me down  –  Lock me in  –  Throw me out
Stitch me up  –  String me out  –  Trap me in  –  Lock me down
Stitch me up … C’mon – Stitch me up
Stitched up
Out of my mind, feelin’
Strung out
Laggin’ behind, all
Trapped in
Can’t do a thing, because I’m
Locked down

Stitched up
Feelin’ the burn, all
Strung out
I finally learned that
Trapped in, I can’t do a thing, because I’m

Locked down
