∇  ‘Paid in full’   ⇓   [Eric B. & Rakim, 1987]

Credited as a benchmark album of golden age hip hop. Rakim‘s rapping, which pioneered the use of internal rhymes in hip hop, set a higher standard of lyricism in the genre and served as a template for future rappers. The album’s heavy sampling by Eric B became highly influential in hip hop production.

a>The →Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool project provides a meeting place where artists of several generations and styles can meet and create a musical dialogue. Where does fusion flow into funk? Where does the controlled anarchy of hard be-bop feed into the adrenaline-rush of hard core hip-hop? The answer to these questions and more are found in the spirit of collaboration and discovery on Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool.

In addition to the straight ahead jazz and rap elements found with on this extraordinary recording, gospel vocals, blues guitar, scat singing, R&B, soul and other African American art forms hug and tug and pull at each other, like relatives at a long overdue reunion. Gender, age, and race are bridged in the three-way effort by Us3, Tony Remy, and Joshua Redman (son of the legendary Dewey Redman). Up-and-coming talents meet one of their heroes in the case of Groove Collective‘s joint jam with funk master Bernie Worell. Ditto for Me’Shell N’degéOcello‘s musical studio encounter with Herbie Hancock. Two men from two different eras but with surprisingly similar ears for music join forces in a track by Donald Byrd and Gangstarr’s Guru. Add the differences of language and culture into the equation when you consider the distances spanned by Ron Carter’s collaboration with Afro-French rapper MC Solaar.

The list goes on and on, including contributions by Michael Franti, Digable Planets with Lester Bowie & Wah Wah Watson, The Pharcyde, Roots with Roy Ayers, Incognito, Carleen Anderson with Ramsey Lewis, Umar Bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyewole (formerly of The Last Poets) with Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry with Watts Prophets, and Branford Marsalis.

¤  John Lurie  ⇓

John Lurie emerged onto the art scene in the spring of 2004, when he had his first painting exhibition at Anton Kern Gallery. Since then Lurie’s work has been exhibited in esteemed galleries throughout the world.  Prior to focusing on painting, Lurie led the band The Lounge Lizards, which went on to make music for 20 years.  During this time, Lurie recorded 22 albums and composed scores for over 20 movies, including Stranger than Paradise, Down by Law, Mystery Train, Clay Pigeons, Animal Factory, and Get Shorty, which earned him a Grammy nomination. Lurie also starred in three films directed by Jim Jarmusch, as well as a host of other films.  He wrote, directed and starred in the cult classic “Fishing with John». Lurie is also responsible for the incredible music of Marvin Pontiac.

David «Fuze» Fiuczynski (born March 5, 1964) is an American guitarist, best known as the leader of the Screaming Headless Torsos and David Fiuczynski’s KiF, and as a member of Hasidic New Wave. He has played on more than 95 albums as a session musician, band leader or band member.

He often describes himself as «a jazz-musician who doesn’t want to play just jazz». Many of his albums have thematic material that ties them to one or more additional genres. Screaming Headless Torsos, for instance, emphasizes a jazz-funk fusion, while Hasidic New Wave blends jazz with Semitic and African music; 2000’s JazzPunk is a recording of standards and covers written by his idols and mentors, in which each tune was reworked in distinctive musical combinations.

BFE¤ Brooklyn Funk Essentials was born out of New York’s buzzing hip-hop-jazz and slam poetry scenes of the early nineties as a 10-piece live outfit consisting of some of the finest young musicians, singers, rappers, dub poets and djs the Big Apple had to offer. BFE has released five studio albums, ‘Cool & Steady & Easy’ (1995), ‘In The BuzzBag’ (1998), ‘Make Them Like It’ (2000),  ‘Watcha Playin’ (2008) and ‘Funk Ain’t Ova’ (2015).
