In a career spanning more than half a century, National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Ron Carter has been so continually in demand that he’s performed on more than 2,000 albums. PreViews Editor John Mark Rafacz speaks with Carter about why, in his youth, he switched his focus from cello to bass. Carter also discusses what he misses about his time with the acclaimed Miles Davis Quintet of the 1960s. In addition, Carter talks about his trio’s new pianist Donald Vega, who succeeded Mulgrew Miller. Guitarist Russell Malone rounds out the trio. An excerpt of Malone’s composition «Cedar Tree» from the album «Golden Striker» — performed by Carter, Malone, and Miller — enhances the video.

Alone together – Beyond the crowd  – Above the world
We’re not too proud to cling together
We’re strong as long as we’re together

Alone together – The blinding rain – The starless night
We’re not in vain  for we’re together
And what is there to fear together

Our love is as deep as the sea – Our love is as great as a love can be
And we can weather the great unknown if we’re alone together . . .

speaklow

Speak low when you speak, love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak, love
Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we’re swept apart, too soon
Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near, tomorrow is here and always too soon
Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We’re late, darling, we’re late
The curtain descends, ev’rything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

◊  Charlie Haden ↓ on His Life, Music & Politics

Amy Goodman [Democracy Now!]  spoke with legendary bass player and composer, Charlie Haden, one of the most politically outspoken jazz musicians of his time. During the middle of the Vietnam War, Haden formed the Liberation Music Orchestra that mixed songs from the Spanish Civil War, anti-war songs and a tribute to Che Guevara. He recently re-formed the group to respond to the Bush administration and the invasion of Iraq. He titled the new album «Not In Our Name.»        [SEPTEMBER 1, 2006]
