Her accessible, moving stories are set in her native Canada, in small, provincial towns like the one in which she grew up, and explore human relationships through ordinary everyday events. Although not necessarily directly autobiographical, they reflect the author&#8217;s own life experiences, are concerned with women&#8217;s lives and are &#8216;probably unrivalled in their fullness&#8217; (Washington Post 1998)<\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Born in 1931 to a farming family, Alice Munro won a scholarship to the University of Western Ontario, where she studied from 1949-1951, but left before graduating, and moved to Vancouver. From 1963 she ran a bookshop in Victoria, British Columbia for several years, before returning to Ontario in 1972. She now lives in Comox, British Columbia and Clinton, Ontario.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her first short story was published in\u00a0<em>Folio<\/em>, a student literary magazine, in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/alice-munro-wins-the-nobel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-11041\" src=\"http:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/AMunro.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/AMunro.jpg 302w, https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/AMunro-95x150.jpg 95w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a> 1950. During the 1950s and &#8217;60s her stories were also accepted for broadcast by CBC and for publication in various journals. Since then many more short stories have been published regularly in prestigious periodicals such as\u00a0<em>The New Yorker<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Paris Review<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Atlantic Monthly<\/em>. Fifteen of her earliest stories, many of which have autobiographical elements, were collected in her book,\u00a0<em>Dance of the Happy Shades<\/em>\u00a0(1974), followed by further collections:\u00a0<em>Who Do You think You Are?<\/em>\u00a0(1978) and\u00a0<em>The Progress of Love<\/em>\u00a0(1986).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Lives of Girls and Women<\/em>\u00a0(1973) was intended as a novel, and published as one, but is in fact a collection of interlinked stories&#8230;\u00a0<em>Who Do You Think You Are?<\/em>\u00a0(1978) chronicles the life of a young woman, Rose, growing up in rural Ontario, the theme of identity being central to the book.<br \/>\nDuring 1977-1981, Alice Munro travelled widely, visiting Australia and China. In 1983,\u00a0<em>The Moons of Jupiter<\/em>\u00a0was published, containing stories also set in Australia and New Brunswick. This was followed by\u00a0<em>Friend of My Youth<\/em>\u00a0(1990), which has an interest in adultery and relationships, and\u00a0<em>Open Secrets: Stories<\/em>\u00a0(1994), winner of the 1995 WH Smith Literary Award, which contains longer stories, as does\u00a0<em>The Love of a Good Woman<\/em>\u00a0(1998).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alice Munro has also written television scripts. A\u00a0<em>Selected Stories<\/em>\u00a0appeared in 1996. Recent collections are\u00a0<em>Runaway<\/em>\u00a0(2005), which won the 2005 Commonwealth Writers Prize (Africa Region, Best Book), and\u00a0<em>The View from Castle Rock<\/em>\u00a0(2006). A further selection of her short stories,\u00a0<em>Carried Away<\/em>,\u00a0was also\u00a0published in 2006.\u00a0Her latest book is\u00a0<em>Away From Her<\/em>\u00a0(2007).
