As a black musician himself, <strong>Arthur Taylor<\/strong> was able to ask his subjects hard questions about the role of black artists in a white society. He also played with <strong>Howard McGhee<\/strong> and other young bop musicians in New York. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypl.org\/audiovideo\/arthur-taylor-full-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8267\" title=\"A_Taylor\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eoisabi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/A_Taylor.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/A_Taylor.gif 197w, https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/A_Taylor-150x137.gif 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the early 50s he was also to be heard in mainstream groups, playing with <strong>Buddy De Franco<\/strong> and <strong>Coleman Hawkins<\/strong>. He continued to play with leading beboppers, including <strong>Bud Powell<\/strong>, and <strong>Art Farmer<\/strong>. Later in the decade was with <strong>Miles Davis<\/strong> and <strong>John Coltrane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From time to time he led his own bands, notably Taylor\u2019s <strong>Wailers<\/strong>, and toured the States and Europe with Donald Byrd, and did a short stint with <strong>Thelonious Monk<\/strong> in 1959. Also in \u201959 he was the drummer on John Coltrane\u2019s <em>\u201cGiant Steps\u201d<\/em> album, which speaks for itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He became resident in Europe in the early 60s, playing with visiting fellow Americans including <strong>Dexter Gordon<\/strong> and <strong>Johnny Griffin<\/strong>. During this period, Taylor began recording interviews with musicians, the results of which, often acutely angled towards the racial and political circumstances surrounding jazz, were first published in 1977 under the title <em>&#8216;Notes And Tones&#8217;\u00a0 <\/em>(which was reprinted in 1993).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the mid-80s Taylor returned to the USA and hosted a radio show. Between 1989 and 1991, he featured several brilliant recordings with <strong>Steve Grossman<\/strong>.
