It was first performed at the\u00a0Queen&#8217;s Theatre, Dorset Garden, London, in late May or early June 1691.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The plot is based on the battles between\u00a0King Arthur&#8217;s\u00a0Britons\u00a0and the\u00a0Saxons, rather than the legends of\u00a0Camelot(although\u00a0Merlin\u00a0does make an appearance). It is a\u00a0Restoration spectacular,\u00a0including such supernatural characters as\u00a0<a title=\"Cupid\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cupid\">Cupid<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Venus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venus\">Venus<\/a>\u00a0plus references to the Germanic gods of the Saxons,\u00a0<a title=\"Woden\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woden\">Woden<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Thor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thor\">Thor<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Freya\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freya\">Freya<\/a>.
