He fills his days by sometimes taking piano lessons in an effort to emulate his late wife, a classical concert pianist, and infrequently works on a new book. When he is asked to present a paper at an\u00a0academic conference\u00a0at\u00a0New York University, he is not enthusiastic to make the trip, given he is only the nominal co-author and has never even read the complete work. Charles (<strong>Michael Cumpsty<\/strong>), his department head, insists and Walter is forced to attend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When he arrives at the apartment he maintains in\u00a0Manhattan, he is startled<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-7843\" src=\"http:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/the-visitor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/the-visitor.jpg 400w, https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/the-visitor-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/the-visitor-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/> to discover a young unmarried couple living there, having rented it from a swindler who claimed it was his. They are Tarek (<strong>Haaz Sleiman<\/strong>), aPalestinian-Syrian\u00a0djembe\u00a0player, and Zainab (<strong>Danai Gurira<\/strong>), a\u00a0Senegalese\u00a0designer of ethnic jewelry. He later discovers both are\u00a0illegal immigrants. Although they have no place to go, they hastily pack and leave, but Walter decides to let them stay. Over the next few days, a friendship slowly develops. Tarek teaches Walter to play the drum, and the two men join a group of others at a regular\u00a0drum circle\u00a0in\u00a0Central Park.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the way home, Tarek is mistakenly charged with\u00a0subway\u00a0turnstile\u00a0jumping, arrested for \u00abfailing\u00bb to pay his fare (although he actually had), and taken to a\u00a0detention center\u00a0for illegal immigrants in\u00a0Queens. In order to prevent Tarek&#8217;s\u00a0deportation\u00a0from the United States, Walter hires an immigration lawyer. Feeling uncomfortable about remaining in the apartment with Walter, Zainab moves out to live with relatives in\u00a0The Bronx.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tarek&#8217;s mother, Mouna (<strong>Hiam Abbass<\/strong>), unexpectedly arrives from her home in\u00a0Michigan\u00a0when she is unable to contact her son. Also in the States illegally, she accepts Walter&#8217;s offer to stay in the apartment, and the two develop a friendship. Walter confesses his life is unfullfilling; he dislikes the single course he has taught for twenty years, and the book he allegedly is writing is nowhere near completion.
