a\u00a0Canadian\u00a0New Wave\u00a0band, active from 1977. \u00a0They chose the name \u00ab<strong>Martha and the Muffins<\/strong>\u00bb to distance themselves from the aggressive names adopted by many punk bands of the era. According to Mark Gane: <em>\u00abWe decided to use it as a temporary name until we could all agree on something better.\u00bb<\/em> The name ended up sticking for the next seven years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Saxophone\u00a0player Andy Haas began performing with the band in early 1978. Founding-member Millar left the band shortly thereafter and was replaced by\u00a0Martha Ladly, who had attended high school with the Ganes. She became the group&#8217;s second keyboardist\/vocalist named Martha, although Martha Johnson remained the group&#8217;s primary lead singer.\u00a0In 1978, they released their first independent single, <em>\u00abInsect Love\u00bb<\/em>. This and a demo tape recorded in June 1978 quickly garnered them a recording deal with the\u00a0DinDisc\u00a0offshoot of\u00a0Virgin Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>\u2022\u00a0International success (1979\u00a0\u2013 1982)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In 1979, the band travelled to England to record their first album,\u00a0<em>Metro Music<\/em>\u00a0(1980) for the DinDisc Label, which gave Martha and the Muffins a major international hit single with <em>\u00abEcho Beach\u00bb<\/em>.\u00a0In October 1980, the band released their second album,\u00a0<em>Trance and Dance<\/em>, which was less successful, and Ladly left the band&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In 1981, bassist Finkle quit too, and was replaced by\u00a0Jocelyne Lanois, the sister of then-unknown record producer\u00a0<strong>Daniel Lanois<\/strong>, who produced \u00a0&#8216;<em>This is the Ice Age&#8217;<\/em>. Shortly after the album&#8217;s release, Tim Gane decided he did not want to tour, and left the band; he was replaced by new drummer Nick Kent.\u00a0Despite critical acclaim,\u00a0<em>This Is The Ice Age<\/em>\u00a0didn&#8217;t spin off any hit singles outside of Canada, and Virgin dropped the band from their roster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>\u2022\u00a0The M+M years (1983\u00a0\u2013 1986)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">After the tour for\u00a0<em>This Is the Ice Age<\/em>, Haas left the band. Gane, eager to drop the name \u00abMartha and the Muffins\u00bb, proposed that the group be now called <strong>\u00abM + M\u00bb<\/strong>. In a compromise, both names were used for a time, and the\u00a0<em>Danseparc<\/em>\u00a0album cover had both \u00abM + M\u00bb and \u00abMartha and the Muffins\u00bb printed on it.\u00a0At the end of the <em>Danseparc\u00a0<\/em>tour, Gane and Johnson (now a couple) announced that, although they wanted to continue as a recording act, they also wanted to branch out in new directions by using new collaborators. In essence, Gane and Johnson decided that \u00abM + M\u00bb was now <strong>Martha + Mark<\/strong>, along with studio musicians and sidemen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The duo&#8217;s 1984 album\u00a0<em>Mystery Walk<\/em>\u00a0was again co-produced by <strong>Daniel Lanois<\/strong> with Gane and Johnson, and it\u00a0gave M + M\/Martha and the Muffins their biggest hit in years with <em>\u00abBlack Stations\/White Stations\u00bb,\u00a0<\/em>an anti-racist anthem whose first verse took radio stations to task for refusing to play a song about mixed-race romance&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In 1985, Johnson and Gane started work on their next album in Montreal before heading to\u00a0Bath, England\u00a0to work with producer David Lord, resulting in the album\u00a0<em>The World is a Ball<\/em>\u00a0(1986).
