After returning to England from Malaya, he was discovered to have tuberculosis and he spent sixteen months in an RAF hospital.<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u203a<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pensioned off at 21 on 45 shillings a week, he lived in France and Spain for seven years in an attempt to recover. In 1955, whilst living in Mallorca with his lover, American poet Ruth Fainlight, and in contact with the poet Robert Graves, Sillitoe wrote\u00a0&#8216;Saturday Night And Sunday Morning&#8217;.<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u203a<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">His story &#8216;<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ucsq_LyU62c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner<\/a>&#8216;<\/em><\/strong>, which concerns the rebellion of a borstal boy with a talent for running, won the Hawthornden Prize in 1959.
