The son of the noted actors, directors, and activists\u00a0Ossie Davis\u00a0and\u00a0Ruby Dee, he was born in New York City on May 12, 1952; though raised in the city,\u00a0Davis\u00a0was frequently regaled with stories of Southern country life as a child, and over time became so enamored of the music of\u00a0Blind Willie McTell,\u00a0Skip James,\u00a0Mississippi John Hurt, and others that he taught himself guitar.<\/p>\n
