He played gospel and country music before turning to blues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lowell joins the US Navy in 1943. On the island of Guam he assembles his first band, and he moves to the West Coast in 1945.\u00a0He meets Bob Geddins in 1946, who quickly signs him up to record for his Big Town and Down Town label.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Trouble Blues&#8217;,<\/em> released in 1947, is the first of Lowell&#8217;s recordings to feature him playing electric guitar. He had his first R&amp;B hit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SD4aXYHZ1OE#t=30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>&#8216;Three O&#8217;Clock Blues&#8217;<\/em>,<\/a> on the Swingtime label in 1948, then in 1949, he enlists the valuable help of pianist and songwriter Lloyd Glenn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1950, Lowell has his first hit with <em>&#8216;Everyday I Have the Blues&#8217;<\/em>. Later in the same year he has his only Number 1 R&amp;B hit with &#8216;<em>Blues Shadows&#8217;<\/em> and in 1951 he tours extensively with a band that includes Ray Charles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1954 Lowell joins Chess label. He records &#8216;<em>Tollin&#8217; Bells&#8217;<\/em> and &#8216;<em>Took a Long Time&#8217;<\/em> in 1957, with Eddie Chamblee on saxophone and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.john-meekings.co.uk\/wdixon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willie Dixon<\/a>\u00a0on bass.\u00a0Lowell leaves Chess in 1964 to join the Bihari Brother&#8217;s Kent label and in 1966 <em>&#8216;Tramp&#8217;<\/em> is a Pop and R&amp;B hit reaching Number 5.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He records\u00a0<em>In a Heavy Bag<\/em>\u00a0in 1970, one of his best &#8216;psychedelic blues&#8217; albums.\u00a0<em>Lovemaker<\/em>\u00a0released in 1978, finds Lowell back in form after some quiet years.\u00a0In 1988 his album\u00a0<em>It&#8217;s a Good Day\u00a0<\/em>is a success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He continued touring and recording well into the 1990&#8217;s, with albums for the European Record label and, most recently the Rounder and Bullseye Blues labels.\u00a0<em>Hold On<\/em>\u00a0is released in 1992, features his old friend pianist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.john-meekings.co.uk\/jmccracklin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy McCracklin.<\/a>\u00a0He won five W.C.
