His solo commercial breakthrough followed later that year with After the <em>Gold Rush<\/em>. \u00a0With its hard rock and folk-influenced acoustic tracks, the record is now considered one of his classic LPs and comprised the single \u201c<em>Only Love Can Break Your Heart.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0\u00abHarvest\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1972\u2019s <em>Harvest<\/em> was an even bigger hit, and turned him into a star.\u00a0 The country rock record went to number one on the charts and was the year\u2019s best-selling album.\u00a0 It included his first and only number-one single, <em>\u201cHeart of Gold.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u00a0The Ditch Trilogy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His next three albums were known as The Ditch Trilogy, and they were commercial disappointments in comparison.\u00a0 However, the record &#8216;<em>Tonight\u2019s the Night&#8217;<\/em> from the trilogy later became known as a ground-breaking endeavor. In the latter half of the decade, \u201c<em>Like a Hurricane\u201d,<\/em> was released and it became one of Young\u2019s most well-known songs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u00a0Electric and Acoustic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He also returned to mainstream consciousness with the recognizable country and folk rock sound of the 1978 record &#8216;<em>Comes a Time<\/em>&#8216;. Young found even more success with 1979\u2019s &#8216;<em>Rust Never Sleeps&#8217;<\/em>, and that album was made up mostly of electric and acoustic tracks recorded during the preceding tour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u00a0Experimentation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Young experimented with different sounds and styles in the early 1980s. His album<em> &#8216;Trans<\/em>&#8216; features synthesizers; while the record <em>&#8216;Everybody\u2019s Rockin<\/em>\u2019 included rockabilly covers. He also had his first hit single during the latter half of the decade with <em>\u201cThis Note\u2019s For You.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 However, 1988\u2019s reunion effort with Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash called American Dream received negative reviews.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0\u00abFreedom\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His popularity returned with the critically and commercially successful effort, <em>&#8216;Freedom<\/em>&#8216;. With its politically-charged lyrics and a heavy use of distortion, the record anticipated the alternative rock explosion. It also spawned the number-two hit, \u201c<em>Rockin\u2019 in the Free World.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0\u00abHarvest Moon\u00bb and an Oscar Nomination<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was followed by the release of the feedback-heavy album <em>&#8216;Ragged Glory<\/em>&#8216; and the live record &#8216;<em>Weld&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0 The next year he went back to country and folk rock with the well-received disc,<em> &#8216;Harvest Moon<\/em>&#8216; and received an Oscar nomination for the song, <em>\u201cPhiladelphia,<\/em>\u201d from the film soundtrack of the same name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u00a0Grunge, Touring and More<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The influence of grunge was heard on Young\u2019s 1994 effort <em>&#8216;Sleeps with Angels<\/em>&#8216;, and also on the top-five record Mirror Ball, which was an effort he worked on with <strong>Pearl Jam<\/strong>.\u00a0 Up next was the movie soundtrack for \u201c<em>Dead Man,<\/em>\u201d the album &#8216;<em>Broken Arrow<\/em>&#8216; with <strong>Crazy Horse<\/strong> and the concert video and live compilation, \u201c<em>Year of the Horse.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 Two years later, Young reunited with <strong>Crosby, Stills and Nash<\/strong> for the disc, &#8216;<em>Looking Forward<\/em>&#8216;, and this was followed by one of the highest grossing tours of 2000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u00a0Politics and the Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the next decade, several albums that Young released showcased his views on numerous issues.\u00a0 For instance, there was the politically-minded &#8216;<em>Living with War<\/em>&#8216;, and the environmentally-conscious<em> &#8216;Greendale, Chrome Dreams II&#8217;<\/em> and &#8216;<em>Fork in the Road&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0 The latter was notable for being inspired by Young\u2019s LincVolt, which was a 1959 Lincoln Continental that was transformed into a more fuel-efficient car.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u00a0Death Scare<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neilyoung.com\/NeilYoungWagingHeavyPeaceExcerpt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-43193\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eoisabi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/WHP.jpg\" alt=\"WHP\" width=\"273\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/WHP.jpg 273w, https:\/\/englishroam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/WHP-136x150.jpg 136w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The decade was also significant for Young\u2019s health, as he was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm.\u00a0 Complications from its treatment later led to his collapse and this incident inspired him to write about mortality on his <em>&#8216;Prairie Wind<\/em>&#8216; album.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u00a0Collaborations and Archive Series<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Young played guitar on the disc, <em>&#8216;Potato Hole<\/em>&#8216;, by Booker T. Jones.\u00a0 The next year, he came out with Grammy-winning solo effort, <em>&#8216;Le Noise<\/em>&#8216;.
