\u00a4 \u00a0Patterns & structures \u00a0\u2193 \u00a0\u00abWhat’s the weather like?\u00bb<\/h6>\n

When we talk about the weather, at a very basic level, we can follow any of these patterns:<\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0It is + adjective<\/strong> (very changeable \/ wet \/ cold \/ cloudy \/ windy<\/em>…)<\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0We use the Present Progressive,\u00a0It is + -ING<\/strong>, when we want to describe what the weather is like right now<\/span>:<\/p>\n

– It is freezing \/ snowing \/ drizzling \/ clearing up<\/em>…\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0If we want to make a general statement (what the weather is usually<\/span> like), we use a verb<\/strong> in the Present Simple plus an adverb of frequency:<\/p>\n

– It rains \/ snows \/ hails … quite often.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0We can also use the formula \u00abTHERE IS\/ARE..\u00bb followed by a noun<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

There is<\/strong> a lot of \u00a0slush \/ hail \/ fog …<\/em><\/address>
There are<\/strong> often \u00a0floods \/ droughts \/ storms…<\/em><\/address>\n

\u2022 \u00a0Another form we can use with nouns (often referring to a recent trend) is \u00abWe HAD…\u00bb:<\/p>\n

We had<\/strong> thunder and lightning<\/em> last night.<\/p>\n

\u2295\u00a0 And remember! Come rain or come shine, it’s always a great opportunity for you to practice exclamations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

– How<\/strong> chilly \/ hot!<\/em><\/p>\n

– What a<\/strong> nice \/ gloomy \u00a0day!<\/em><\/p>\n

– What<\/strong>\u00a0 lovely \/ miserable \u00a0weather!<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0Predicting the weather:<\/strong><\/p>\n

We can make predictions about the weather, using a range of forms \u2013 not just the \u00abwill\u00bb<\/em> or \u00abgoing to\u00bb<\/em> form:<\/p>\n

\u00abI think it’ll clear up later.\u00bb \u00a0\/ \u00a0\u00abIt’s going to rain by the looks of it.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00abWe‘re in for<\/strong> frost tonight.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00abThey‘re expecting<\/strong> snow in the north.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n
