The X-Games<\/strong> are the Olympics of extreme sports! They are held twice a year in the summer and winter: the best athletes from around the world are invited to compete and try to outdo<\/span> each other with the biggest, highest, fastest, most difficult tricks. A trick<\/strong> is a stunt, an action like a jump, a flip, or a spin. Competitors are give a score for their tricks by a panel of judges. They compete to win medals (gold, silver, and bronze), AND a lot of money! They also try to impress the fans with never-before-seen tricks.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In American English you can use the verb ‘practise’<\/b>\u00a0or ‘practice’<\/b>\u00a0(as it is spelt there) to mean \u00abto train\u00bb:<\/div>\n

There are three verbs that collocate with sports and other free time activities:\u00a0go<\/b>,\u00a0do\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0play<\/b>, but they are not interchangeable:<\/p>\n

  • Go<\/b>\u00a0is used with activities and sports that end in\u00a0-ing<\/b>. The verb\u00a0go<\/b>\u00a0here implies that we go somewhere to practice this sport:\u00a0go swimming<\/i><\/span>.<\/li>\n
  • Do<\/b>\u00a0is used with recreational activities and with individual, non-team sports or sports in which a ball is not used, like martial arts, for example:\u00a0do a crossword puzzle,\u00a0do athletics, do karate<\/i><\/span>.<\/li>\n
  • Play<\/b>\u00a0is generally used with team sports and those sports that need a ball or similar object (puck, disc, shuttlecock…). Also, those activities in which two people or teams compete against each other:\u00a0play football, play poker, play chess<\/i><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    NOTICE:<\/strong> \u00a0We use ‘do’<\/em><\/strong> in informal English to talk about activities that take a certain time, or are repeated (like jobs and hobbies). In the same way we ‘do’<\/em> collocates with \"\"household chores (‘do the<\/strong> cleaning\/washing-up \/shopping…’<\/em>) we can use ‘do’<\/em> with most -ing forms; only, we replace the definite article with other quantifiers:<\/p>\n

    I haven’t done any<\/strong> skiing this year.<\/address>\n
    I don’t do much<\/strong> drawing in my job.<\/address>\n
    I did a lot<\/strong> of swimming last summer.<\/address>\n
    I hardly ever do any<\/strong>\u00a0handwriting.<\/address>\n
