{"id":26651,"date":"2015-01-16T18:52:02","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T18:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eoisabi.org\/?p=26651"},"modified":"2023-06-22T21:39:33","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T21:39:33","slug":"ron-fricke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/englishroam.com\/?p=26651","title":{"rendered":"Ron Fricke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pioneering filmmakers that have expanded the image vocabulary of documentaries, <strong>Mark Magidson<\/strong> and <strong>Ron Fricke<\/strong> join BYOD to discuss <em>Chronos, Baraka<\/em>, and their new creation, <em>Samsara.<\/em> Discussing the difficulties of capturing stunning images in remote locations, and the signature filming techniques that have blown millions of minds, Ron and Mark key us into their inspiration behind <em>Koyaanisqatsi, Chronos, Baraka<\/em>, and <em>Samsara.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pvx0n7LxEGk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his early work as director of photography, co-editor and co-writer for <strong>\u00abKoyaanisqatsi\u00bb<\/strong>, a renowned nonverbal art film, Ron Fricke experimented with many previously obscure film techniques. He used time-lapse, slow motion and optical phase printing to present familiar images from a new perspective.\u00bbKoyaanisqatsi\u00bb won a 1983 Filex Audience Award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Indulging his passion for 70mm, and determined to make life affirming films, Fricke proceeded to direct and co-produce <strong>\u00abChronos\u00bb<\/strong>, an innovative, nonverbal, IMAX film that won the Grand prix du jury Award at the first Festival International Omnimax de Paris (1987). For \u00abChronos\u00bb Fricke designed an IMAX compatible camera with the capacity to shoot motion controlled images, a revolutionary concept in the IMAX industry. Fricke gained experience on several other IMAX films including <strong>\u00abSacred Site\u00bb<\/strong> (1986) which he directed and photographed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Developing the themes of interconnection and transcendence, which Fricke began to explore in \u00abChronos\u00bb, <strong>\u00abBaraka\u00bb<\/strong> is a journey of rediscovery that plunges into nature, into history, into the human spirit and finally into the realm of the infinite\u00bb. In order to capture the exquisite rotating star fields in the film&#8217;s finale, Fricke designed and built a more flexible and complex version of the (65mm) 70mm time-lapse camera he designed for \u00abChronos\u00bb. The entire film has the enhanced, hyper-realistic quality of a laser-etched photograph, and by using special cameras and motion-control photographic techniques, Fricke and his technically expert crew were able to create mesmerizing images guaranteed to spark any viewer&#8217;s sense of awe and wonder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This visual journey takes the viewer on a tour of over 50 locations on nearly every continent of the world, including explorations of Paris, the Vatican, the Egyptian pyramids, the African veldt, and many more stunning vistas. The film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds: urban life and technology versus the environment. The musical score was composed by\u00a0<strong>Philip Glass.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This full length documentary is visually arresting and possesses a clear, pro-environmental stance. Koyaanisqatsi is composed of nature imagery, manipulated in slow motion, double exposure or time lapse, juxtaposed with footage of humans&#8217; devastating environmental impact on the planet. The message of director Godfrey Reggio is clear: humans are destroying the planet, and all of human progress is pointlessly foolish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">KOYAANISQATSI attempts to reveal the beauty of the beast! We usually perceive our world, our way of living, as beautiful because there is nothing else to perceive. If one lives in this world, the globalized world of high technology, all one can see is one layer of commodity piled upon another. In our world the \u00aboriginal\u00bb is the proliferation of the standardized. Copies are copies of copies. There seems to be no ability to see beyond, to see that we have encased ourselves in an artificial environment that has remarkably replaced the original, nature itself. We do not live with nature any longer; we live above it, off of it as it were. Nature has become the resource to keep this artificial or new nature alive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">KOYAANISQATSI is not so much about something, nor does it have a specific meaning or value&#8230;\u00a0The film&#8217;s role is to provoke, to raise questions that only the audience can answer. This is the highest value of any work of art, not predetermined meaning, but meaning gleaned from the experience of the encounter. The encounter is the interest, not the meaning. If meaning is the point, then propaganda and advertising is the form.
