and it&#8217;s a good way to avoid misunderstandings resulting from <strong>ambiguous \/ remote \/ vague\u00a0<\/strong>reference . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8211; Ambiguous reference\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0occurs when pronouns such as &#8216;he,&#8217; &#8216;she,&#8217; &#8216;it,&#8217; &#8216;they,&#8217; &#8216;this,&#8217; and &#8216;that&#8217; don&#8217;t refer clearly to one thing. Suppose a friend of yours made the claim that<br \/>\n<blockquote><p><em>Teddie never argues with his father when <strong>he<\/strong>&#8216;s drunk.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As the claim is stated, you don&#8217;t know who is drunk. Is it Teddie or his father?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grammar.about.com\/od\/ab\/g\/amphibolyterm.htm\">Amphiboly<\/a>\u00a0exists because the word <em>&#8216;he&#8217;<\/em> is ambiguous.
