\u00abThe Sound of Jazz\u00bb<\/strong>\u00a0is a 1957 edition of the\u00a0CBS<\/a>\u00a0television series\u00a0Seven<\/a>\"\"<\/a> Lively Arts<\/a><\/em>, and was one of the first major programmes featuring\u00a0jazz\u00a0to air on American network television.\u00a0The one-hour program aired on Sunday, December 8, 1957, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time, live from CBS Studio 58, the Town Theater at 851 Ninth Avenue in\u00a0New York City. The show was hosted by\u00a0New York Herald-Tribune\u00a0<\/em>media critic\u00a0John Crosby, and directed by\u00a0Jack Smight \u00a0\u2192<\/p>\n

The Sound of Jazz<\/em>\u00a0brought together 32 leading musicians from the\u00a0swing\u00a0era including\u00a0Count Basie<\/a>,\u00a0Lester Young<\/a>,\u00a0Ben Webster<\/a>,\u00a0Billie Holiday<\/a>,\u00a0Jo Jones<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Coleman Hawkins<\/a><\/strong>; the Chicago style players of the same era, like\u00a0Henry \u00abRed\u00bb Allen<\/a>,\u00a0Vic Dickenson<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0Pee Wee Russell<\/a><\/strong>; and younger ‘modernist’ musicians such as\u00a0Gerry Mulligan<\/a>,\u00a0Thelonious Monk<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0Jimmy Giuffre<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
